welcome to i & b ...

Welcome to Idle & Blessed a little window into what I have been making and creating in my world of Far North Queensland...

The name Idle & Blessed is inspired by my favourite poem of Mary Oliver, who captures in her writings the simple, yet profound beauty ever present within our world...

The Summer Day [Mary Oliver]

Who made the world?
Who made the swan, and the black bear?
Who made the grasshopper?
This grasshopper, I mean -
the one who has flung herself out of the grass
the one who is eating sugar out of my hand,
who is moving her jaws back and forth instead of up and down -
who is gazing around with her enormous and complicated eyes.
Now she lifts her pale forearms and thoroughly washes her face.
Now she snaps her wings open, and floats away.
I don't know exactly what a prayer is.
I do know how to pay attention, how to fall down into the grass,
how to kneel down in the grass,
how to be idle and blessed, how to stroll through the fields,
which is what I have been doing all day.
Tell me, what else should I have done?
Doesn't everything die at last, and too soon?
Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?

Oliver's writings have inspired my own reflections both written and visual; many of which are featured in my blog Traces.  My aim with Idle & Blessed is to find a way to share some of the thoughts and images featured in Traces in a more tactile and tangible way...

I am fortunate to be Idle & Blessed in Far North Queensland... making the time when I can to stop, to appreciate, to take note, to be grateful.  Sometimes it is through a photograph, through writing, through drawing, other times it is simply through taking the time to just be...

My first series of cards featuring original images and text inspired by life in Far North Queensland are currently in production and I will be posting more soon as to when and where they are available...
